Parking and permits for the truck
A truck parked close to the door means a faster move. Every metre between the truck and the entrance is paid in billable minutes — and on a Montreal street, it's never guaranteed without preparation.
1The temporary occupancy permit
- Most Montreal boroughs issue a temporary public-domain occupancy permit that reserves street space for a truck. Request it at the Accès Montréal office (311) or online, ideally 5 to 10 business days ahead.
- The cost varies by borough and duration (often a few dozen dollars per day). Specify the length needed: our 20 and 22-foot trucks need about 12 metres including manoeuvring room.
- The borough installs temporary signs 24 to 48 hours before. If a car is still parked in the zone that morning, call 311 or the local police station: it can be towed.
- In metered or permit-only sectors (Plateau, Ville-Marie, Rosemont…), the permit is the only way to guarantee a spot. Without it, budget for the truck's meter hours.
2Depending on your situation
- Residential street with no restrictions: usually no permit needed, but use the "placeholder car" trick the night before and check street-cleaning signs (banned certain mornings April to November).
- Back lane: our 20-foot trucks fit most Montreal lanes, but not all (wires, branches, width). Send us a photo of the lane entrance and overhead clearance: we'll confirm.
- Condo tower or rental building: ask the manager for access to the loading dock or drop-off area, and its cut-off time. It's often part of the elevator booking.
- Suburban house with a private driveway: the truck goes in the driveway if it's free and clear (no car, bins, bikes). Tell us if the driveway is sloped or gravel.
- Construction zone or closed street: check the City's website or the Info-travaux app a week before. A street closed that same morning can mean a 200-metre walk with your furniture.
3What happens otherwise
- If the truck has to park far away, the walking time ("long carry") is added to the duration of the move — the scenario we all want to avoid.
- A double-parked truck can be ticketed and moved; our drivers won't stay in violation. With a permit or a reserved spot, the problem doesn't exist.
